A historic port town on the Darling River, Wilcannia is roughly 960km north west of Sydney, and 200km east of Broken Hill. The first white discovery was in 1835, and European pastoralists established the area as a hub in the 1850s. Thirty years later Wilcannia was home to over 3,000 people and was one of the largest inland ports in Australia. The port predominately served paddle steamers transporting wool, wheat and other food travelling and trading with the towns on the Darling River system. Wilcannia is rich in history, and the Heritage Trail provides a great opportunity to see over a dozen sites with historic importance – most of which have placards outside telling their own story. Many of the Barkindju people who have been living in the region for over 40,000 are all too happy to have a chat with visitors about the history of their people and the land.
