Known as the cherry capital of Australia, the region produces the best cherries and stone fruits in the country. Every year the town hosts the National Cherry Festival which brings thousands of visitors, and includes a range of events such as a street parade, markets and pie eating competitions. The Lambing Flat riots took place in 1860-1861, and were violent protests against the Chinese, after their success at gold mining. A group of 3,000 drove the Chinese off Lambing Flat, stealing their possessions and destroying the tents at the same time. More violence followed, but today the Chinese Tribute Garden sits as a beautiful tribute to the contribution of the Chinese to settlement in the region, and for the contribution of the Chinese to Australia as a community and a nation.
